Adaptability
One day while sketching a numbingly bored tiger that was in a traveling zoo, I noticed that the reason for their striped pattern on their fur was to blend into their environment. This particular tiger was leaning up against a chain-link fence, when it dawned on me that this fence is a closer representation of their environment today. So, I manipulated the stripe pattern of his coat into the design of the chain-link fence, cementing the commitment to their adaptation. Early in my career, I was more interested in having the viewer relate what they were seeing to themselves. So, instead of using the tiger as a vehicle for this concept, I incorporated the cougar, so people on this continent would relate to a more indigenous species. |
