 Organizations and Tactics

The special forces of each nation are listed in the last part of the booklet, along with which chart to consult, and any modifications needed.

ORGANIZATION

A special ops group can be organized in any manner needed, especially for highly specialized missions, like raids and hostage rescues. There are, however, a few relatively typical organizations.

The "Patrol"

LRRPS usually operate in teams of three to six:

  • a Leader
  • a Medic
  • a Radioman (sometimes with an assistant)

and, depending on the organization, a few scouts. (American divisional LRRP teams are six men, and most European armies use four to six man teams).

SAS - type troops usually operate in "Patrols", generally of four men. These teams consist of:

  • A Leader (a senior sergeant or lieutenant)
  • a Medic
  • an Engineer/demolitions specialist
  • a Scout.

Four Patrols are a "Platoon" or "Troop", led by a captain. Four troops make up a "Squadron" or "Company", led by a Major. Four squadrons, with supporting units, make up a battalion, led by a lieutenant colonel.

In the SAS, each troop of a squadron has a specialty either HALO jumping, boat and scuba operations, landmobile operations in special landrovers, and arctic/mountain operations. All British SAS men rotate through CRW (CounterRevolutionary Warfare) training the hostagerescue course.

USSF troops' primary unit is the "A" team. It consists of:

a Leader (usually a captain)

an Assistant Leader (a lieutenant or senior NCO)

 2 x Light Weapons specialists

 2 x Heavy Weapons specialists

 2 x Communications specialists

2 x Engineers (with both civil and combat expertise)

 2 x Medics

Characters who are in USSF-type units should pick one of the above specialties, and emphasize the appropriate skills (Small Arms, Infantry Heavy Weapons, Electronics, Combat and Civil Engineering, or Medical) when generating their characters. Each member is crosstrained in another specialty, as well.

The A team is a self-contained force that can serve as both a combat unit and the nucleus for a guerrilla group.
