 Military Musician

“Me and Curlewski was near this village in southern Norway, with a company of these Scottish soldiers - the “Kings Own Scottish Borderers” was the name of the regiment.  And one day, this Ivan patrol drives into the village.”

“Well, we was outside, nothing heavier than an FN-MAG and a couple LAW-80s.  They were a heavy patrol - couple of BMPs, some scout cars with big, nasty 14.5mm machine guns - bad odds.”

“But this Brit - ‘scuse me, SCOTTISH captain, Captain Pardoe, calls up this guy with this cloth bag.  He pulls out...bagpipes.  Jeez, I figure, what’ll these Brit nutbars think of next?”

“Anyway, the piper - Piper MacTaggart - starts playing this song.  One of the guys knew it - ‘Claggghthth of McGrrrrrrrrcht”, or something like that, what with their accent and all.  Whatever - all I know is, when the music started playing, these Scottish guys start getting seriously stoked.  Just like in that Mel Gibson movie with the blue face paint and the mooning and stuff”.

“They put down covering fire and charged in like there was nothing there.  And the Ivans?  Sheesh, it was like the sound of the bagpipes spooked them.  They started bugging out, fast, like they’d heard a wolf howl or something.”

“Maybe in a way they had”.

Military Musicians’ normal duty is to play music - generally but not always martial music.

However, they also accompany their armies into combat.  In the old days, their duties included playing as their units marched into action.  This is usually not done anymore - musicians have a variety of other duties.  They serve most frequently as security troops for headquarters, or as ambulance drivers and orderlies at field hospitals.
