"My old man, who was also a marine, asked me what kind of troops they got working for Vanguard. "Lotsa Marines, I said. Force Recons, Grunts, and another Sniper besides me. "My Mom, who takes some interest in the military, what with me and my dad and my older brother having 38 years in the corps between us, asks, "Anybody besides marines?" "Mom', I says, 'Does it really matter? All the other services exist just to support the Marines anyhow!'" Most nations that have navies have marine corps. Marines traditionally served as assault and security troops on naval vessels in the age of sail, and, as such provided the first "rapid deployment forces" - a flotilla commander would commonly take the marines from all his ships to form a ground force capable of intervening in situations on shore. The various marine corps have evolved from theresoldiers with a lot of naval tradition, usually speaking naval jargon and trained in many naval traditions. But marines today, for the most part, are ground troops, albeit with different missions. They are generally regarded as elites, and they know it - "Esprit De Corps" is something that all armed forces try to instill in their recruits, but it's an especially important part of Marine training worldwide.
