Remember the anthrax?

In July 2000, Germany's Bayer AG had negotiated an unprecedented sole endorsement by the Federal Drug Administration of Cipro for anthrax, despite Cipro’s high price and largely untested status (one animal study for anthrax treatment in 1993). At a cost of $700 for a sixty-day supply, Bayer made out like a bandit. Cipro sales rose by 1000%. The Bush administration sweetened the pot by awarding an exclusive Health and Human Services contract to the pharmaceutical giant.

A controversial anthrax vaccine was already being produced by BioPort Corporation. In October of 1998, BioPort won an exclusive $29 million contract with the Department of Defense. Subsequently, the Pentagon increased the contract to $49.8 million and advanced BioPort $1.7 million to cover its outstanding debts. Oddly enough, BioPort’s major investor was Saudi entrepreneur Fuad El-Hibri, friend of the bin Laden family and former merger and acquisitions manager for Citigroup. The Carlyle Group has been named as another major shareholder. (by Michelle Mairesse at New Enlightenment)

If there was no intent to profit motivating them, it is very difficult to deny that the government made an effective salesman for Cipro specifically, in spite of the fact that other antibiotics work well.  Profits were in fact made.  Even if it is completely innocent, it strikes me that there is considerably more reason to concern ourselves with things like this than for stained dresses and staff willing to cover your ass to prevent just the sort of silly circus led by Ken Starr.

Incidentally, the FBI has already stated that the source of the anthrax was probably internal--most likely a partisan crackpot scientist at an East Coast government lab engaged in biological weapons research in violation of our own treaty. Hmm.  America has been creating super anthrax in violation of an international treaty they swore to uphold, and the FBI is very reluctant to reveal that somebody in our own government sent anthrax to key liberal politicians.  However, it appears that the unofficial-yet-public suspect may well be a fall guy to hide some other sinister scientist.

Whichever partisan monsters were involved, it does make me wonder why a Muslim extremist would attempt to kill Tom Daschle or Dan Rather.  This has the smell of an unspeakable act of partisan politics from the inside.  IF this is the case, and some cadre of vicious right wingers is attempting to eliminate the last vestiges of liberalism (and/or Democrats) from the government, this all sounds kind of like the work of Saddam Hussein, doesn't it?

Perhaps the most significant element that points this direction is the fact that the corporate mega-media matrix is broadcasting a wide spectrum of corporate propaganda: Talk Radio to Public Radio.  Bush voters are moving away from him in increasing numbers.  The polls lie.  NPR was pimping the NASDAQ to provide smoke and mirrors for the Gingrich/Clinton 1995 victory of the Multinational Corporate tax dodgers and off-shore enterprise conmen.

Secret manufacture of weapons of mass destruction, using those weapons on your own people, implementation of dictatorship and restriction of freedoms, uncharged prisoners held indefinitely and secretly.  Only a complete idiot would blame all this on a dunce like Bush.  He's just a puppet in this sick drama.  Whatever is going on here, it is abundantly clear that Bush, Cheney, Thompson and Ashcroft are fully involved and responsible for a massive cover-up and disinformation campaign.

  • Perhaps we should be looking at the Grover Norquist/Islamic terrorist connection too?   FBI raids right wing offices over connections to Islamic terrorism another article from the New Republic on Norquist's activties.  Whatever his motives may be, Norquist is actively working to bring Muslims into the Republican party, and this has been rather controversial, especially among the pro-Israeli constituents in the GOP.  Interestingly, Norquist has been vocal in opposing Ashcroft's treatment of illegal immigrants and Muslims suspected of association with terrorism.
